Everyone Need Fire Extinguisher Training!

In the event of a fire at your home or place of employment, what do you do? Have you had specific training? Are there escape routes mapped out and displayed somewhere on the premises? Have you looked at them? Have you practice fire safety techniques and strategies. Has your employer made sure you have some basic education? Have you taught your children at home what to do in case of a fire?

These are all questions we should ask ourselves. It's too easy to let safety training slip to the back of our minds, since it is something we don't use every day, and in reality, will hopefully never have to use at all. This doesn't change the fact, however, that it is truly essential that we are able to give satisfactory answers to those questions. A little preparation can mean the difference between life and death.

One aspect of fire safety is knowing how to stop a small fire once it's been started. In many instances this will mean operating a fire extinguisher. Of course we have all seen extinguishers being used, if only in the movies, but does that mean that we are prepared to use them should the need arise?

The fact is, we see fire extinguishers every day. They are probably in every building we enter, and, if properly placed, should be in plain view and easily accessible. Do you pay attention to where they are? If you haven't before, start noticing them. Even if you are able to locate one if necessary, because of lack of experience or training, few people really know how to use a fire extinguisher.

Extinguisher training should be a part of every fire safety training course. Even if you are having a short training meeting at work, your employer should take the time to make sure that those who occupy the work space are made aware of how to use a fire extinguisher.

This will include understanding what kind of extinguisher is available and what type of fire it is for. Different extinguishers are made to put out different classes of fire. For example, you would certainly not want to use a water extinguisher on an electrical fire, and some other types of extinguishers will be ineffective on certain types of fires.

Besides being familiar with its type, extinguisher training should obviously include instruction on how to operate it. There should be instructions on every model, but a previous training can save time that would be wasted trying to figure out how to work the thing.

Whether at your workplace or at home, take the time to receive or give a little fire extinguisher training. Those living under your roof should be able to use your extinguisher, should such action ever be called for, and this simple understanding can prevent large amounts of damage and even death due to a fire that is allowed to burn out of control because nobody could stop it early on.
