Fire Extinguishers Save The Day!

Fire safety is something that every person should be aware of. There are some very basic principles and rules, many of which are very common sense, which should be observed by anybody in a given building. At home, the family needs to be aware of fire safety rules and the same goes for the employees in a place of work.


One essential part of fire safety is something that helps to ensure that a fire does not spread and become out of control. Fire extinguishers make it possible for those at the scene of a fire to put the fire out before it can become unruly and cause serious damage and/or injury.

Every building should have conspicuously placed fire extinguishers ready for use in case of an emergency. They should be well marked and it is a good idea to ensure that the people who spend time in the area are aware of how to use the fire extinguisher.

There are many different types of fire extinguishers, differing in size, means of propellant and the contents they hold. The reason for this is the need to use different substances in putting out different types of fires. While some substance will work on almost all types of fires, others are better suited only to those involving organic solids or flammable liquids. Flammable gasses, electronics, metal and cooking fat and oil might not be extinguishable with some, so it is important to consider the type of area it will be used in before choosing a fire extinguisher.

There are some other types of fire extinguisher which are also helpful in putting out small fires. One is the fire blanket, which can be thrown over the fire and patted. Another is the ball or grenade style extinguisher which can be rolled or thrown into a fire. It explodes on contact with fire and expels a cloud of dry chemical powder over an area of 5 square meters, which puts out the fire. These can also be left in an area and will automatically deploy in case of a fire.

In order to be of use in promoting safety fire extinguishers absolutely have to be well maintained. Unfortunately, especially in private use, people purchase a fire extinguisher and never think about it again. This means that it may sit unused for twenty years, and then, just when it is needed, it is no longer functioning properly! It's an insurance device that will do you no good unless you maintain it!

Making sure you have the right type of extinguisher, you know where it is for easy access, and that the extinguisher is regularly maintained by a professional are the keys in making safety fire extinguishers the safety feature and safeguard against widespread fire that they are meant to be.
