Fire Inspector/Fire Inspection: Making Your Home Or Building A Safer Place
There are many things we can all do to make our homes and workplaces safer. It doesn't require much, but small efforts can mean the difference between life and death as well as possibly losing your property.
In terms of fire safety, there are a lot of common sense things everyone should keep in mind in their homes. We all know not to play with fire or leave candles unattended. Most of us are aware that we should have fire extinguishers available and smoke detectors on each floor of our home. But is this enough?
Well, the fact is, it may be enough, but only if you understand rules of fire safety very well. Really, very few of us do, and for this reason, fire inspections can be very helpful to make sure we have everything up to code in order to prevent any fire that is at all preventable.
A fire inspector has the job of ensuring that buildings, including homes and other properties are up to the current fire code. Fire inspectors might be part of the fire department and may be or have been firefighters, or they may be part of the building department. Some are sworn law enforcement officers. However, they don't always have to belong to these fields. Some home inspectors receive specialized training that allows them to perform fire inspections as well.
In the United States, the person responsible for performing fire inspections is most often a fire marshal. The fire marshal ensures buildings are up to code and also sometimes have the responsibility of enforcing laws related to flammable materials, and also make arrests in instances of arson and other fire-related crimes. Not all fire inspectors are fire marshals, though.
Every building needs to be up to fire code. This means regular inspections must be made to review the premises and ascertain whether there are fire hazards present in any area of the building, including the electrical wiring. They also make sure that the fire alarms and smoke detectors are in the proper places and are working well. Fire inspectors determine whether or not the safe occupancy level is being complied with.
Fire extinguishers are also an important aspect of fire safety that will be checked during a fire inspection. Extinguishers need to be available in the proper places, and be of the right type to put out the class of fire that is most likely to occur in a given building.
Fire extinguishers also need to be maintained. This means they should be checked yearly and be refilled every few years, depending on the type of extinguisher. Also, occupants of the building need to be aware of how to use them.
Just to be in accordance with the law, buildings need to be inspected regularly. It's a good idea to have your home inspected by a professional to help you understand the dangers that exist in your own home and what you need to do to be as safe as possible.
