Responsibilities Of Fire Services

There are a few occupations that stand out in people's minds as noble and requiring bravery. This usually leads to a great deal of respect and appreciation, as well as trust in the individuals involved in this type of career. Firefighting is one of the top examples of such an occupation.

What little boy doesn't want to be a fireman at some point in their life? They dream of making a difference, being Spiderman, Superman or? A firefighter! All superheroes! But what exactly do those involved in the fire services do?

Firefighters are responsible for the obvious: putting out fires that endanger people's lives or property. There is so much involved in just this basic job description, but still that's not all that those involved in fire protection are responsible for.

Fire services are also responsible for rescuing people in other dangerous situations. For example, firefighters are the ones who rescue people from car accident and collapsed buildings or various other situations from which people may be unable to extract themselves.

Another important task fire services have toward fire protection is to inspect buildings to ensure they meet current building fire codes. This helps to eliminate potential fire hazards, decrease the risk of fire spreading, and ensure that all within the building can evacuate safely.

Another important aspect of the fire services is the need for firefighters to protect themselves. It is common knowledge that in case of disaster or emergency, the lives of those responsible for rescuing others are extremely important! In a job like this, you don't take any unnecessary risks.

Some of the ways firefighters ensure that they are able to perform their responsibilities is by carrying special equipment to help them breathe as tools. They also work in pairs so they can help each other. In many areas firefighters wear a PASS (personal alert safety system) which alerts their team if they stop moving for a period of time, or if they activate it themselves.

Often firefighters are the first on the scene in cases of hazardous material incidents. They have equipment and training to deal in these emergency situations, often at higher level than other emergency responders.

Fire services are responsible for fire control, including protecting the environment as well as individuals and their property. In controlling and putting out fires they provide a service that is invaluable to every member of the community and at risk to their own lives and health.

We should all remember that those involved in fire services really are super heroes! Let's look up to them with the same admiration and gratitude that little boys have for them. They're there for us!
